CNN —It’s been a Block party all week at the PGA Championship, and the man at the heart of festivities is not done partying just yet. Michael Block, the 46-year-old club pro who teaches golf lessons at a public course in California, is schooling many of the game’s biggest stars on New York’s notoriously challenging Oak Hill East Course. In the 105 years of the PGA Championship, no PGA Professional has ever finished inside the top 10. Not since Steve Schneiter in 2005 has a PGA pro finished inside the top-40. Should he remain eighth at the end of play, Block will earn $545,000, according to CBS Golf – even 30th place would see him take home $110,000.
CNN —Enjoying a season of unparalleled success, the sun has shone on Jon Rahm almost permanently in 2023. Another bogey at the second hole extended the 28-year-old’s nightmare start. It was a camera operator’s turn to take the brunt of the golfer’s frustrations at the eighth hole. “Stop aiming at my face when I’m mad, it’s all you guys do,” Rahm could be heard saying on broadcast. It marked the start of a run of three straight bogeys, but as the weather began to improve, so did Rahm.

Jan 26 (Reuters) - Tiger Woods will not be at his favourite hunting ground of Torrey Pines this week but former Masters winner Trevor Immelman expects to see the 15-time major champion back at Augusta National in April. 2008 Masters champion Immelman said that despite Woods's inactively he fully expects to see the five-time Green Jacket winner in the field for the year's first major from April 6-9. "I do anticipate him playing the Masters," added Immelman, who makes his debut as CBS Sport's lead golf analyst on Friday at the PGA Tour stop at Torrey Pines, where Woods has won eight times. "He has to make sure he is really ready to walk that course four or five days in a row. "I think a lot of it will depend on how the major golf courses are set up for him."

Both Wallace and Fox were individually honored during Queen Elizabeth’s reign for services to their sports. If that wasn’t enough family sporting heritage, Wallace’s brother and son – George and Gregory – both played first-class cricket for Auckland. “It’s pretty cool to be the third generation of my family to represent New Zealand,” Fox told CNN’s The Jazzy Golfer. The Internationals, with a record eight Presidents Cup debutants in their 12-man squad, kept the outcome in doubt until late into Sunday's singles when Xander Schauffele beat Canada's Corey Conners 1-up to register the winning point. Captaining the international team at the Presidents Cup has never been a particularly easy endeavor. In the biennial team battle between the U.S. and the world—minus Europe—the Americans have been utterly dominant. But this year, picking the international roster was especially fraught. In recent months, players kept captain Trevor Immelman in the loop as they mulled decisions that would not only define their personal futures, but also the future of golf. And each time one of those players told Immelman they were leaping to LIV Golf, Immelman had to strike them from his team.

Sep 21, 2022; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; The International Team poses for a team photo during a practice day for the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Quail Hollow Club. Even the American players have expressed sympathy for the challenge facing Immelman who will send a out record eight debutants into the Presidents Cup at the Quail Hollow Club. "It's never been done before, and I'm not a stats guy, but I'm going to say the percentage of it being done is very low. "We've still got to go out there and compete, and there's still a really good international team over there with a lot of up and coming players. Being installed as the favourite is not a new experience for the U.S. when it comes to the Presidents Cup, but seldom have the predictions of a runaway rout been so sweeping.
Oosthuizen, who has played in the last four editions of the Presidents Cup, had hoped that by resigning from the PGA Tour, which runs the Presidents Cup, he would remain eligible for the match-play event at Quail Hollow Club. The PGA Tour has suspended members who competed in LIV Golf events from playing on the U.S.-based circuit and said anyone else who makes the jump will face the same fate. "My understanding is that he made particular announcements and allowed himself to be used in different marketing campaigns and announcements once he was not given the release from the PGA Tour," Immelman told reporters at Quail Hollow Club. "Every single player that I spoke to from early on in this process knew exactly what the situation and the consequences were going to be," said Immelman. The PGA Tour organises the Presidents Cup while LIV Golf, bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, has been busy poaching players, luring away some of golf's biggest names with staggering sums of money. South African Louis Oosthuizen, Chile's Joaquin Niemann and Mexico's Abraham Ancer are also unavailable to International captain Trevor Immelman, who has called up a record eight Presidents Cup debutants. Australian Adam Scott, playing his 10th Presidents Cup and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama his fifth are the only members of the squad to have played in more than one event. Every other Presidents Cup has gone to the United States with the exception of 2003 in South Africa that ended in a draw. "We look forward to the Presidents Cup every time.
